From Afar

By Angela Gacheru

From Afar

You rose from the ocean depths

at the crack of dawn,

painting the sky like a canvas —

yellow, orange and red hues.

I felt the touch of your rays

warming up my skin,

and tingling joy filled my heart.

I wished for that moment

to last forever.

Winter came lurking

in the dead of night.

Cold winds blew violently

stealing the warmth you once gave.

Grey clouds hid your face,

lightning struck, rain poured,

and suddenly, everything went black...

I longed for summer to come.

I thought for a while

that I would never see you again.

I wished to cry, but my eyes remained dry.

When will the storm end?

When will I smile again?

As my hope was ebbing away,

one thing came to mind:

Just because your light went dim,

did not mean you ceased to exist.

In the darkest of days

when all I see is grey,

remind me that you’re still there.

Let me feel your presence

though you’re far away.

Let me rest assured,

that distance will never separate us.

I know now for certain,

that you never left;

you stayed in place,

burning unabatedly,

watching over me,

loving me from afar…
